Sailing Lake Pleasant in Clipper 21

Article By Boyd Coleman

Boyd emailed me and said he had Friday off, wanted to see if I would like to come along on the maiden sail of his Clipper 21.

The weather was looking like rain all week, right up till the day before and then the weather report turned to 11 winds, cloudy and only a light shower in the morning. So I met him up at Lake Pleasant.

Heading down the South ramp, there were a couple of guys who had just previously launched with their mast down and they were in the process of setting it up on the water. They had a gin pole and I made a remark to them asking where the tonic was. I know, pretty lame joke, but they got it and gave me a token laugh.

We sailed to the North end of the lake to look for the Treasure Island geocache This photo is the island, looking at it from the East side.

On the other side of the channel was a marker on the shore that said 1702, I belive that is the high water mark, and you can see the water is almost up to it.

We pulled around to the lee of the island wondering if we went to the wrong side. So many other people logged the cache saying they anchored on the wrong side of the island and had a long hike, where we landed it was only 300 feet away.

I climbed out first and my whole foot almost submerged into the mud. That is a pretty loose shore line!

We walked along the shore then up the side of the hill a little bit and found a fresh trail thru the grass. Someone had been to the cache just yesterday and so it was almost like a big marker showing exactly where to go.

This is standing at the cache and looking actross to the North.

On our sail back we saw a few other sailboats out enjoying the nice day.

Unforunately all days must come to an end....
