Pet Fathead Minnows
Back to main page
I was down at the lake, walking the shore looking for some more native fish. I stumbled upon a fisherman who was very friendly, and after chatting for a bit he was getting up to go and was just going to dump his minnows into the lake. He asked if I wanted them, so I said thanks and put them into my collection jar.
I tossed them into my pond back at home and looked them up on the net. I found Robyn's Rosy Red Minnow Page which has a ton of great info on them.
Yea, I know what you are thinking -- they really are just bait, aren't they? Why would anyone keep them as pets?
Well, Robyn's page points out a few interesting points about these fish:
- They swim around a LOT. My other fish are currently hiding in any spot they can find.
- They calm other fish to make them come out and swim more.
- They are active in cold water.
Best of all, my kids really like them. :)
