There are more sailboat games listed at PDRacer.com If any of the fleet members has a specific game or race they would like to do, then speak up the next time we meet or email me, and lets do it. Here are directions to Tempe Town Lake.
What is the Parent Youth Fleet?
The youth has their hand on tiller and is the captain of the vessel. The parent (and any other crew aboard at the time) is there to help with whatever is needed, including holding onto the tiller. We will be doing lots of alternate types of fun racing and sailboat games, much more than just going around the bouys. Not really a forum for learning, not really a serious point scoring fleet, something half way between with the primary goal of being creative and having fun on the water.
Who is invited?
Anyone with any type of sailboat and a kid to hold the tiller is welcome to join us. Participating in this fleet is FREE. If you are not an AYC club member, you can still come sail with us to try it out, but we would like you to join. Most of the youths are in the 8 to 12yr old range so far, and the boats are different types such as Bucc 18, Capri 14.2, Laser, Sunfish, PDRacer.
Suggested Extra Equipment
Squirt Gun, long rage type - for tagging others during certain games
Couple bright colorerd sponges - also for tagging others during certain games
Canoe Paddle - for when the wind dies, the adult can paddle and the kid can steer with the tiller
Your own Lunch - after each event we will sit on the hill and have a lunch together.
Safety Rules
No Contact Between Boats - The boats should never touch each other, even if you have the right of way, do whatever it takes to avoid a collision. We don't have any serious scoring and are just goofing around on the water, would hate to have a finger pinched or scratches to hulls.
No Boarding Others Boats- The kids need to stay with their boat, and their parents. If the kids board someone else's boat, they might hurt themselves during the boarding, or slip and fall on a piece of hardware.
No Water Balloons - Some of the games require projectiles, for this we will use large sponges and squirt guns. Water balloons litter the water and I don't think the Rio Salado folks would be very happy with us if we did.
Borrowing Club Boats
The club owns a bunch of Capri 14.2's and Sunfish stored at Tempe Town Lake in the gated storage area, but I do not know how to borrow them and don't have a card key for the gate. If you would like to use a club boat, you will need to contact someone from the club to figure out how to. All of our games are scheduled at times when there aren't any other club events at TTL.
Boats For Sale
Here are all of the local boats for sale that I know of which would be good for the PY races:
Vagabond 14 - Patrick Valandra 602-332-3031
Capri 14.2 - Dennis Martinelli 602-795-4855
Here are all the boat buying places I think are worth mentioning: [click here]
And you could always build your own boat, like the PDRacer
Trophies
Everyone who participates in a series (even if just once) will get a trophy. The trophies are homemade, the way it works is that everyone makes a homemade trophy and submits it to me during the season. At the end of the series, the first place team gets to pick out the trophy they want, and the 2nd place then picks theirs etc. I'll provide a few extra trophies to make sure that you don't have to take home your own.
