Lake Conroe Messabout -- Saturday April 19th, 2003
Sponsored by Tim and Shorty
At the Conroe Yacht Club, near Houston TX
About the event:
Twice a year we organize a small boat "messabout", for the purpose of just spending the day chatting about boats, and taking a few sails close to the club. Everyone is invited, it doesn't matter if you have a boat or not, all that matters is that you show up. The event is geared towards homemade boats, but all boats are welcome, and I always bring a fiberglass boat because that is what I have. Special Guest Gavin Atkin
Gavin is a boat designer from England. He has designed many boats, written numerous articles that have apeared in DuckWorksMagazine.com, has won the design contests there, and I think is most famous for designing the Mouse which is a small 8' kayak type boat.

Starting Time:
The gate will be open by 9am, and people are welcome to arive sooner or later.
The bulk of the crowd usually arrives around 10:30am and stays till after 5pm.
Event is for Saturday April 19th only, a 1 day event.
Facilities:
NO PETS! A dog was brought the first year, but since then nobody else has. Need to make sure that is clear, the yacht club strictly forbids them.
There is a club house with 2 bathrooms and a small kitchen.
Our activities will be held about 100 yards away from the clubhouse, unless there is rain. If it rains, we have the club house is reserved for our activities.
We congregate on a muddy beach just a few yards from where most people park. It is fairly private being on the far side of the property from where the yacht club activities take place. The water is protected and fairly shallow except for the dug out channel for the keel boats to get out to the lake. If you look at previous years photos you can see the layout of the cove. There are 2 concrete boat ramps near by. One of the ramps is more steep than the other, so we should be able to launch just about any boat you can trailer up here.
Food:
A grill, hotdogs, buns, sodas and water will be provided, you are welcome to bring other food and drink.
Hotels:
The yacht club is in the small community called Walden. If you want to stay overnight, there are motels along the I-45 highway that offer good parking and turn around space for trailers. There is also Del Lago Resort just before entering Walden.
Camping:
The yacht club does not permit overnight camping on their grounds. In the middle of Lake Conroe is Ayres Island, it is #3 on this map [click here]. One thing you might do is launch your boat at the club, and then camp overnight on the island. I have a geocache placed on the island, for info about it [click here]. And here are a couple of pictures of the island: [Picture 1] [Picture 2] [Picture 3]
