Lake Conroe Messabout 2002
Sponsored by Tim and Shorty
At the Conroe Yacht Club, near Houston TX
To be held Saturday April 13, 2002
*** Rain or Shine - the messabout will be held!
The 4 day forcast says it might rain Saturday afternoon, regardless we will be holding the messabout. I know one person is flying in to visit with us, and others are driving long distances. We are bringing 2 shelters, if we have to hide under them, then so be it.
Come to the Conroe Yacht Club just North of Houston Texas to the annual Houston messabout, held on income tax weekend - so do your taxes early and come messabout! It doesn't matter if you have a boat or not, it doesn't matter if your boat was built at home or a factory, just come to have fun with other people who are all nice and enjoy watercraft.
Rumor has it that a newly constructed pocket cat will show up this year, Tim is bringing his Martha Jane, June Bug and America kayak, I will be bringing my Guppy and Mouse. Jerry Scott has brought his beautiful IMB the past couple of years, hopefully he will be bringing it again this year. Many people have been bringing their pirogue / canoe / kayaks, dinghies, small sailors. Every year the event gets bigger, and this year sounds like it is going to continue the growth.
Starting Time:
The gate will be open by 9am, and people are welcome to arive sooner or later.
Last year the bulk of the crowd arrived before lunch and most stayed till after 5pm.
It is for Saturday April 13th only, sorry it is not a 2 day event.
Facilities:
NO PETS! A dog was brought the first year, the yacht club owner went bezerk, but since then nobody else has. Need to make sure that is clear, the yacht club strictly forbids them.
There is a club house with 2 bathrooms and a small kitchen.
Our activities will be held about 100 yards away from the clubhouse.
We congregate on a muddy beach just a few yards from where most people park. It is fairly private being on the far side of the property from where the yacht club activities take place. The water is protected and fairly shallow except for the dug out channel for the keel boats to get out to the lake. If you look at previous years photos you can see the layout of the cove. There are 2 concrete boat ramps near by. One of the ramps is more steep than the other, so we should be able to launch just about any boat you can trailer up here.
Food:
A grill, hotdogs, buns, sodas and water will be provided, you are welcome to bring other food and drink.
Hotels:
The yacht club is in the small community called Walden, and it is too small to support a hotel. If you want to stay overnight, there are motels along the I-45 highway that offer good parking and turn around space for trailers. It will not be possible to camp at the yacht club.
Overnight on the Island:
There is a small island in the middle of Lake Conroe, to see a map [click here]. Some people have expressed an interest in spending Saturday night out on the island after the messabout. The Conroe Yacht Club doesn't permit overnight stays, but an alternative is that you could launch at Anchorage marina (1), then sail to the messabout at Conroe Yacht Club, then after the messabout is over, sail to the little island in the middle of the lake (3), and either anchor or beach the boats on it's sandy shore. Anchorage Marina 936-856-6423, From I-45 exit 92, West on FM 830, go about 4.5 miles till road ends at the lake turn R into marina, $5 to launch, no retrieval fee, can leave car overnight.
The geocache I previously left on the island is gone, however I plan to leave a micro cache there soon. To see photos of the island [click here].

Donate:
In previous years, Tim has been a member of the yacht club, but has since resigned. To hold the event, we had to pay $100 to the club, if you would like to donate, that would be greatly apreciated. Also if you you purchase a product from my web site, the profits will go towards funding the event, just include a note when you go thru the shopping cart.
We were considering moving the event to a public area, but there is a $5 fee at the other public boat ramps, and there would be many other people like fishermen that would also be using the location. Staying at the yacht club is much more private, with better facilities.
