Ship Shape - Grandpa's Boat

Article By Shorty

The inspiration for this boat came from my grandfather James Cooke, who is the sailor in my family which got me started. His retirement community had a regatta in their local pond, this is the boat he entered, named "ship shape". When I saw the boat, I just laughed and laughed.

I did the calculations and found that I could make a monohull 14' long that would perform much like a kayak, and still be able to display a proportionate decoration.

My back porch was a complete mess while building these two boats. I tracked cardboard sawdust everywhere.

Here is the basic sketch I did on the cardboard before hand.

10pm, on Thursday night (the night before the media event), I finally finished.
