Mini Rudder - For Rowing Sailboat

Article By Shorty

The holder 12 hull was designed as a sailboat, but also makes a great row boat. Not a great one, but still good, and better than no boat at all.

One of the problems is that as you row, you will start to gain speed and becasue the hull is a skimming type, you will start to plane and then all of a sudden the hull will literally spin around on the water.

A solution I came up with is to make this little stubby fixed rudder. It is more like a skeg like kayaks use, but is removable. It provides just enough directional stability that you can row her pretty hard and she won't spin out. But the blade is small enough that you can turn and it won't resist too much as you make the turn.
